Ribbon Cutting at Oxnard Transit Center
Oxnard unveiled its newly renamed Zaragoza Oxnard Transit Center last month. John Zaragoza is a native of Oxnard and served as a county supervisor, city councilmember, and former mayor. His time in office amounted to over 60 years of service. Zaragoza is a steadfast advocate of transportation, and we are happy to see his legacy honored in this way.
AT&T Connected Learning Center Opening
The Boy & Girls Club of Greater Ventura in Saticoy held its grand opening of the AT&T Connected Learning Center. AT&T donated $50,000 to equip the center with new computers, a large touchscreen monitor, fiber internet, and WiFi for three years. This site will help students with schoolwork, college applications, and job applications.
Emprendimiento and Spanish Business of Care Grant Awards Ceremony
The Women’s Economic Venture hosted its Emprendimiento and Spanish Business of Care Grant Awards Ceremony in Camarillo last month. This is an eight-week business training program that specializes in helping childcare providers grow their business. We are proud of the 23 graduates who completed this program to help our community.
State Funding
Children’s Holistic Immigration Representation Project
The Children’s Holistic Immigration Representation Project is set to receive $15 million through the 2026-27 budget. The program helps to provide unaccompanied immigrant children with legal representation through the Santa Barbara Immigration Legal Defense Center. This funding will help nearly 100 minors through the next year.

SUN Bucks Food Program
Is your child on summer break and in need of a nutritious meal? SUN Bucks provides families with $120 per child to buy groceries during the summer break. Those funds will be placed on an EBT card and must be used within 122 days. The application deadline is August 31.

Santa Barbara Cultural Arts Grant
The City of Santa Barbara has opened its annual Cultural Arts Grant. Community members who are interested in sharing the importance of art can apply to three different grants. Applications must be submitted by August 17 at 5:00 pm.

Ojai Wildfire Resistant Construction and Landscaping
Attend a free two-day course from August 17 to 18, hosted by the Ojai Valley Safety Council, to learn about wildfire-resistant construction and landscaping. You will learn about building materials that protect homes, plant selection, and maintenance to prevent wildfires.

An Introduction to Obon: A Japanese Summer Festival
Date: August 22
Time: 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Venue: The Museum of Ventura County
Details: Learn about the tradition of Obon while making paper lanterns and enjoying Japanese drumming by Togen Daiko and Bon Odor.
Chicana/o Moratorium
Date: August 29
Time: 11:00am - 5:00pm
Venue: The Agriculture Museum
Details: Honor the first Chicana/o Moratorium held on August 29, 1970. Mexican Americans gathered in Los Angeles to protest the Vietnam War and draw attention to racism across the nation. Food trucks, community information booths, live music, and more will be on site to help remember this historic event.
