A Time to Honor

Before my August recap, I want to take a moment to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Today marks 25 years since tragedy unfolded in New York City, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon. We honor the brave first responders, the survivors, and the families that are still healing.

In August, we wrapped up the legislative year and passed bills that strengthen our communities, uplift our families, and support the shared goals of California. We also honored women founders who are accelerating California’s economy. In the district, we celebrated another Fiesta.

Public Safety Power Shutoff Banner

Potential PSPS Event

As our communities continue to face an extreme heat warning, Southern California Edison has issued a potential Power Safety Power Shutoff from Friday, September 11 to Saturday, September 12. To stay informed, sign up for alerts about outages by clicking here. 

In order to stay safe and stay cool during a power outage, pack an emergency kit that includes batteries, bottled water, nonperishable foods, and locate your nearest cooling center. Stay cool and stay safe as this heat wave moves through California.

I had the incredible opportunity to administer the oath of office for Ventura County Supervisor Vianey Lopez as she embarks on her new journey as an alternate to the California Coastal Commission. Vianey previously served as our District Director, and we are proud of her continued achievements as she works to protect and preserve our coastlines.

Santa Barbara County Public Health Fair

Team Limón helped distribute personal care items, vegetables, and backpacks during the Santa Barbara County Public Health Fair at Franklin Elementary School. Events like this are great for connecting with the community and ensuring our students are set up for success this year.

Noche de Pueblos Originarios

The Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project held its annual event – Noche de Pueblos Originarios. The evening celebrates the rich cultures, traditions, and resilience of the Indigenous migrant communities that the organization serves across the California Central Coast. This year marks 25 years of service and the legacy of founder Sandy Young. Congratulations to MICOP – wish you many more years to come.

Nonprofit of the Year Town Hall Event

Last month, I was also honored to co-host our annual Nonprofit Town Hall event with Assemblymember Bennett. This event is an opportunity to discuss legislation and the budget, and hear an update on what the state is doing to support the critical missions of our nonprofits.

The Retirement of Santa Barbara CEO Mona Miyasato

We were happy to join the retirement ceremony for Santa Barbara County Executive Office Mona Miyasato, after 13 years of service. During that time, she brought new opportunities for growth in our district as she led 23 departments and 4,700 employees. We wish Mona the best of luck in her new journey and thank her for over 30+ years of dedicated public service. 

 

 

State Investments in the District

The Santa Barbara Unified School District received $3 million from the state budget to help fund special education. The district also received $2.4 million under the Learning Recovery Emergency Block Grant to help with academic recovery following the COVID pandemic.
