Senate Leader Limón and Budget Chair Laird Respond to the Governor’s Proposed State Budget
SACRAMENTO — California State Senate Leader Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) and Senator John Laird (D-Santa Cruz), Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statements in response to the Governor's Proposed 2026-27 State Budget.
“California’s economy remains strong despite the challenges we face and the direct attacks from this federal administration. During these times of uncertainty, we must craft a responsible budget that prioritizes the safety and fiscal stability of California families,” said State Senate Leader Monique Limón “ We appreciate the Governor’s budget proposal and look forward to working with him and our Assembly partners in the months ahead to craft a more resilient fiscal foundation for a stronger future.”
“The Governor’s budget reflects a stronger near-term picture than we expected last summer, while maintaining a cautious posture in the face of ongoing economic volatility,” said Senate Budget Chair Senator John Laird. “We look forward to delving into the fine print of the Governor’s proposal released today and over the months ahead through our open, public budget process.
I appreciate that the Governor proposes allocation of higher-than-expected revenues to close the prior projected shortfall, meet the constitutional obligation for school funding, and to shore up important reserves.
The bottom line for us as Senators is that we have our work cut out for us in managing fiscal uncertainty and ongoing budget challenges. As we begin this year’s budget work, we know that building a strong foundation for the future requires responsible budgeting that brings stability to California’s naturally volatile revenue system. We are pleased that under this proposal, state budget reserves would increase to $23 billion, which will provide an important buffer against future uncertainty.
We will hold an oversight hearing on this budget the week after next and begin subcommittee review of each part of the budget in March. I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Administration to produce a responsible, balanced budget that addresses today’s priorities while preparing for the risks ahead.”
