Thurmond and Limón to Call on Textbook Publishers to Safeguard Access to Diversity and Equity

(SACRAMENTO) – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has named Senator Monique Limón co-chair of a special task force to ensure students have access to information that is inclusive of the diverse narratives of California. Thurmond, Limón and legislative leaders are asking California textbook publishers to appear at a hearing on June 21st in Sacramento to pledge their commitment to continued access to the full history of California.

“As our nation grapples with book bans and literary exclusions, it is critical that we ensure California students have access to information that is reflective of a more complete history and broader representation,” said Senator Monique Limón. “I am honored to stand alongside Superintendent Thurmond and my colleagues in the legislature to identify ways to advance more inclusive educational systems and resources.”

“Publishers reap close to $500 million annually from California public schools—we need those who benefit to do what is best for students. We know we can improve graduation and college-going rates among all students—and especially teens of color—when they have the opportunity to see themselves represented in the curriculum and classroom,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Thurmond in a press release on Saturday. “More than 75 percent of public school students in California are students of color, but some textbooks still fail to reflect the student population we serve. We need to do better so our students can thrive.”

Over the last few months, California has taken steps to protect access to books and educational materials that are reflective of the diverse experiences and perspectives of all Californians, including that of marginalized communities.
