SEN. LIU TO HOST HEARING ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN CAUGHT IN BUDGET CRISIS

January 30, 2012

SACRAMENTO, CA – New data show women and their families are falling even farther behind economically and facing more hurdles because of the lingering recession and state budget crisis, Sen. Carol Liu will announce at a hearing Wednesday (February 1, 2012).

Liu, Chair of the Senate Human Services Committee, will conduct the hearing titled “Falling Behind: The Impact of the Great Recession and the Budget Crisis on California’s Women and their Families.” The hearing coincides with the release of new, independent report detailing these impacts.

Liu will Chair the hearing along with Assembly Member Holly Mitchell, Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health and Human Services. The Legislative Women’s Caucus and the California Commission on the Status of Women will also participate.

“High unemployment rates, cuts in higher education, and reductions in state services only make things worse for women and children,” said Liu, D- La Cañada-Flintridge. “We need to understand these impacts so we can make changes that will help women achieve financial stability and success.”
